Who Is She?
As I’m heading towards the front of the class, I see my classmate who’s a bit shorter than me, standing and smiling at me. She was about 5’4, fair skin wearing lightly cheetah printed glasses and had light brown curly hair. I noticed her white fur sweatshirt with “The North Face” Logo on the back. As sitting down right next to each other, we introduced ourselves to one another. Her name’s Rose Crisostomo Cabrera. As speaking to her for the first time, it felt like I’ve known her since forever. She was nothing but good vibes which made the interview less awkward and more exciting.
Rose, which is short for “Roseiris” was born on December 24th, 1997. She is from the Dominican Republic which I found surprising because she does not look Dominican at all. She laughed and mentioned how that wasn’t her first time hearing that. Rose currently lives in Queens, NY but grew up in Washington Heights but for the first five years of her life, she grew up in the Dominican Republic. Before moving to Queens, she lived in Connecticut for about four years where she attended boarding school. She did not go into detail about her boarding school so I assumed she didn’t feel comfortable talking about it. Rose is a third-year student here at CCNY who is majoring in math/finance. I found that very surprising because I wouldn’t think anyone would want to major in math. She explains her love for math and how she would want to make that as a career in banking. As for some people, they chose CCNY for its’ amazing programs and education. For my new friend Rose, she chose CCNY for its convenience and for financial reasons.
Just right off the bat, I knew Rose had an upbringing and positive personality. She would throw in a cheesy smile and laugh between answers. She lightened up the dull mood with her energy since our class was a morning one. She didn’t hesitate to answer any questions and made the interview more like a friendly conversation. Not only being a math/finance major, but she also loves reading. When I asked if she likes to read, her eyes popped up and was eager to answer, “yes!!” For someone who enjoys reading, she has a lot of favorite books. She took a while to choose her all-time favorite book but she finally came up with an answer of “The Stranger” and “Anna Karenina.” She also took a while when I also asked if she had to choose one author to meet, who would it be. She thought about it and thought about it till she finally came up with an answer which was Albert Camus. I assumed since she loves to read, she also loves to write. Well, not exactly. She nervously laughs and explains how she HATES to write. She went on about how writing is something she always had trouble with whereas, for reading, she loves to admire other people’s beautiful writing. We began on talking about how we both hate writing which got us more comfortable with one another and sidetracked us both from continuing the interview.
Setting aside all the boring, educational topics, I wanted to get to know the real Rose. Besides reading, Rose loves to listen to music. In particular, she loves listening to Hispanic music such as salsa. As I was getting to know Rose, I learned that we have so many things in common such as music taste, not liking to write, etc. If Rose won the lottery today, she would invest her money and open an account. Of course, her being a finance/math major, I am pretty sure she knows what she’s doing. Let alone her having her head in books, Rose would love to travel soon. She plans on visiting either Morocco or Japan for her birthday.
Overall, Rose is an intelligent, amazing, ambitious, sweet young woman that has a set and bright future ahead of her. After asking and answering questions, we began to go into deep conversations and talk about our personal lives. As we were talking, I noticed she would move a lot and talk with her hands which I found interesting. She would move in her seat here and there. This exercise not only allowed me to get to know about my classmates but also gained a new friendship.
