Who is Ola Alzindani?

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Ola Alzindani. I was born in Brooklyn, New York, but my family is originally from Yemen. As being a second-semester student here at CCNY, I can say that my experience so far has been stressful yet exciting. I have made new friends and have gotten used to City College’s environment. I am a timid person when it comes to presentations, starting conversations, so on and so forth. Yet when I am with my friends, I tend to be the loudest of them all and the one with the most energy. Everyone has their weaknesses and strengths throughout their life. One of the weaknesses that I fail to improve is procrastination. Ever since I was young, I would always, always, always leave everything in the last minute. It is just a bad habit that cannot be overcome, but there is a bright side to it. Yeah, I procrastinate, but I put my best work into each assignment. As for my strengths, I tend to do my best when it comes to listening to my classmates. During peer-reviews in class, I am all ears what everyone has to stay about each other’s work. I like peer-reviewing because I get to see from another person’s point of view about my work and receive feedback that will help me improve my writing. Personally, for me, I do not like writing unless the topic is personal to me. I find writing about other topics such as politics is just dull. However, do not get me wrong, I love reading about what is currently going on in the world but to sit down and write about it bores me. I do not read books for the fun of it. I prefer movies over books because it just interests me more and I tend to pay attention better. My favorite movie all time has to be, hands down, “Maid in Manhattan.” I do not know if it was because of Jennifer Lopez or just the way the movie played out, but that is my favorite movie. Hmm, what else about me? Coming from a Yemeni family, it is not always that common for the girls to attend college because usually the topic of marriage is brought up. Same goes for the men in the family, but instead of marriage, they get a job.  Luckily for me, my mom is open-minded, and education is before anything else. The goals I hope to accomplish is to graduate college with a BA in psychology and attend back for my masters. In hopes of graduating, I will be the second person in my family to graduate college. Ever since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to become a registered nurse, but while attending CCNY, I grew a love and passion for psychology. Besides psychology, I also have love and passion for basketball. I grew up playing basketball with my three older brothers and two sisters which one is younger, and the other is older. I never took basketball seriously until high school when my gym teacher saw my talent on the court one day. From there, I gained some confidence and tried out for the girls’ varsity basketball team which I made after the first tryout. Being a covered Muslim playing organized basketball, I caught a lot of people’s attention in school and out of school. I was offered scholarships during my senior year, but I declined the offers because basketball was more of a hobby than a lifestyle. I still play basketball to this day, in fact, I am an assistant basketball coach at an after-school program. Here and there, I think to myself if it was ever a mistake to decline the offers I was given. But hey, everything happens for a reason, right?
